*** UPDATE: April 30th, the contest is closed and we will soon announce a winner! ***

We are giving away the large banner at the bottom of the page for three months. Why? Because we can.

It doesn’t really matter why. Let me just say that we are thankful to the many people who have helped us personally and anonymously, including the many folks in our online community.

Thank you.

However small a gesture this may seem, it is something we can do today with what we have, and who knows, maybe it will help someone!

So if this is an offer you’d like to take advantage of, read the section below. If you know someone or some group that might appreciate this please forward the link, or feel free to enter for them, with their permission of course.

How do you enter?

To enter the contest please fill out the comment box explaining who you are and what you do, big or small, that might change the world one step or one person at a time. You might run a blog, a small business, community group, volunteer association or something we haven’t considered.

The entry period will close on Wednesday, April 27th at 11:59pm PST, our 20th wedding anniversary.

I am a chef who lives as a urban organic farmer who eats out of my garden and the local environment as much as I can. I also keep bees in a chemical-free manner in the hope of keeping alive these important pollinators and helping to improve their genetics. I have made many mistakes and I have had some successes, and I hope to share those with my readers. I also write in hope and passion that one person will be healthier and happier because he or she reads what I wrote.

Thanks Mil – just checked out your site, looks great. I enjoyed the article, “4 Creative Ways to lesson nuclear fallout in your edible garden.”

Disposable plastics are the greatest source of plastic pollution. Designed to be discarded, straws, plastic bottles, plastic utensils, lids, plastic bottles and so many others offer a small convenience but remain forever.

Plastic Pollution Coalition is a global alliance of individuals, organizations and businesses working together to stop plastic pollution and its toxic impacts on humans, animals and the environment.

With its work, Plastic Pollution seeks to put plastic pollution at the forefront of global social, environmental and political discourse.

Plastic Pollution Coalition provides a platform for collaboration and coherent communications; increases awareness and understanding of the problem and sustainable solutions; and empowers action.

As inconceivable as it may seem to some, I really think a huge part of conscious living is fed by an appreciation of the art, attitude and lyrics of the great punk rock artists of today and yesterday. This generation and the one before it learned, directly or indirectly, from these artists who were willing to challenge convention and point out the absurd and hypocritical nature of the systems we accept as completely normal.

It can be argued, successfully, I believe, that punk was the precursor of the anti-globalization movement and has been on the forefront of promoting almost every left-wing cause to arise since its inception.

What we do at punkretrospective.com is bring attention to the punk rock artists who cultivated the DIY ethos and are not afraid to stand up, even when everyone else is trying to shout them down.

    Thank you for your consideration…

Interesting. I would not have thought to include a blog like yours, but honestly I grew up on The DK’s, Ramones, Talking Heads, Psychic TV, The Residents, The Clash, etc. Although I would say other things have shaped my thinking in a more profound way since then, you’re right, those musicians had a tremendous impact on changing the way I look at life, culture, politics, values, society. Thanks for the comment.

It’s true…there is, in a song, or an album, a chance to introduce a mind to a subject. Certainly, this is not limited to punk rock, but, being an underground movement, not unlike the consciousness movement, it’s had a rather large impact with very little mainstream support. Obviously, a group focusing in on a certain problem, say Green Peace, should always give more depth…as should a teacher, but these are artists, who only hope to create questioning minds, rather than support a single cause. They deserve the attention of today’s youth and the consciousness movement.

I know, for myself, that I am more open to the messages of equality, freedom and non-violence because of this music, which has always been characterized as violent, misogynistic and hate-filled.

I’m glad you recognize your punk roots as important and have had a tree spring from them…it’s happened all around the world…and even though it looks like we’re headed for dark days we will come together and make a better world!

Thank you for doing what you do…it’s a great blog with important, useful information! Uncommon!

What a cool idea! I nominate one of my online blogging friends for the free banner ad contest. It’s Marianney’s blog A Life Set Free. She recently started Operation Starfish which highlights amazing people who have started charitable projects and events. It’s all talked about on her Starfish Project page.

What I like about her project is she’s highlighting individuals and real people, rather than huge non-profit organizations with massive operating budgets. I’m really excited about what she’s doing and having a banner ad would give her some great exposure at the beginning of her new endeavor.

So anyways, cool idea guys! I bet you’ll have so many incredible entries to choose from it will be a tough decision. 🙂

We are just now getting the site up and running, but I would like to nominate overgrowGMOs.com!
The goals of the site are to have an informational site on current threats by GMOs, present readers with alternative ideas to thwart these threats and avoid them, and finally to introduce a number of ideas and calls to action that are effective counter-attacks on these corporate driven, GMO initiatives!
Thanks for your consideration… We can sure use the exposure!

Although I recently left the field that pointed me down this environmental path that I am currently on, I still carry with me the most important lessons learned from more than a decade working in zoos, aquariums and rehabilitation shelters. Perhaps the biggest lesson is that we are all connected; what I do today really does impact the future environment and the animals that I so deeply treasure. While I may not have the hands on contact that I once had with wildlife, I do what I can to lighten my impact on the earth. Recently, I started my own upcycling business (UpcycledStuff.etsy.com). I find it tremendously rewarding to take something that was headed to the recycle bin or trash can and repurpose it into something useful and beautiful. And now I use several mediums to get the word out about upcycling. I use a blog and facebook fan page to give others green living tips and offer DIY upcycling tutorials. I share even more what other eco-friendly folks are doing through the use of twitter. The most rewarding part of this “business” is indeed the time I spend educating others and teaching them about the things they can do in their daily lives to live a little greener. I use quotes around business, because I have given away about twice as much as my sales totals. So while that may not make good “business” sense, it makes perfect sense to me!

    Thanks for your consideration!
