I thought this was a great picture to illustrate the importance of sun and shade in your designs, and learning through observation. We have several areas in the yard that are almost always in shade, even in the summertime. This creates some unique micro-climates, like in the image above, where snow in the shaded area remains three or four days after snow in the partial shade or no shade areas has completely melted.
As far as observing your site, we new this area stayed shaded, but the impact of the shade was not really clear until we had seen it for a full season.
In other parts of the yard that are in full sun, garlic is already trying to sprout. Although we’ve had several warmer days here, it is December 2nd, our winter. No plants in the partial to full shade are under the illusion that spring may have already started.
